Home Safety Assessments
Safety is a critical part of our lives. For an individual with autism, safety risks can be magnified due to limited situational awareness, communication deficits, sensory issues, and fixations on specific items. The National Autism Association research shows roughly half, or 48%, of children with an ASD attempt to elope from a safe environment, a rate nearly four times higher than their siblings without ASD, and 40% of their parents had suffered sleep disruption due to fear of elopement.
Safety should not be left to chance. It should be addressed through a multifaceted safety plan that is specific to the individual’s unique needs. This plan should include input from the family, behavioral treatment, and a home safety assessment. Commonwealth Autism Services provides several types of home safety assessments to identify environmental and safety modifications that can be made in the home as additional safeguards when used in combination with behavior therapy and consistent supervision. It’s leadership team has over 25 years of experience providing home safety assessments and developing of safety plans. They have been successful in assisting families in finding solutions for some of the most complicated situations.
Commonwealth Autism Services will meet with you virtually to learn about your child, assess your home, identify the known and potential hazards, and offer solutions to decrease the risk posed by those hazards. Following the virtual conversation and a video inspection of the area, CAS provides a written report with home safeguarding recommendations and safety product suggestions.
